About the Author

Scholarly research made accessible — for anyone who wants to understand the world and solve its problems.

Probability, economics, defense, geopolitics, business — these are the topics that fascinate me, and the ones I write about most. The work is grounded in real scholarly research, but always written for a wide audience: curious, motivated people looking for honest answers to the problems they face.

My background is a bit of an unusual mix. A degree from the United States Air Force Academy, then a Master of Science in Applied Economics from Johns Hopkins, and a stint flying for the Air Force — all of which pointed me toward writing as the best way to put those experiences to work.

The through-line across everything is pretty simple: take ideas that deserve a wider audience and make them genuinely useful to the people who need them most.

The Work

Research-driven ideas, written for everyone.

Too much great research never escapes the academic bubble — it sits behind paywalls, wrapped in jargon, and never reaches the people who could actually use it. That's the gap I'm trying to close. Rigorous, evidence-based thinking shouldn't be a specialist's privilege.

Every book and essay starts with the same question: what does the research actually say, and how does it help real people make better decisions? The topics shift — luck and timing, economic outcomes, defense policy, geopolitical forces — but the approach stays the same, and so does my commitment to making it readable.

An economist's training, a researcher's habits, and years operating in high-stakes environments give me a perspective that tries to be both analytically honest and practically useful. The goal, every time, is to hand readers a sharper lens for the problems they're already dealing with.
